Bird in My Apartment

Okay, so this post has nothing to do with food, because instead of spending my morning working on a new recipe, I spent it rescuing a bird. I can’t make this stuff up.

Aaron and I were on our daily morning walk with Honey to take her to the dog park, when we spotted this small, bright yellow bird in the middle of a busy street. It was obvious this was someone’s pet, and it was clearly lost.

Fortunately, there weren’t too many cars, so being the animal-lover that I am, I stopped traffic for a few seconds and got the bird to fly over in the direction of the sidewalk. People driving by must have thought I was insane, trying to walk a spastic puggle and simultaneously catch a bird, but you do what you have to do. Honey was pretty psyched about the situation – she thinks everything is a toy for her.

Aaron was able to drape his coat over the bird (it wasn’t scared of people), and we ran home, crossing our fingers we hadn’t accidentally suffocated or crushed the poor thing. It was fine, so we put it in our bathroom, and then went and got our landlord, Tom. Lucky for this bird, Β Tom just happens to be a bird guy, with an extra birdcage and birdseed. Again, I can’t make this stuff up.

We’re hoping to post a few flyers, contact the MSPCA, and find its owner. If not, Honey may be getting a bird instead of another dog.

I’d say we’re equally excited about the prospect.

Have you ever rescued a lost or stray animal? And does anyone know anything about birds?!

I know nothing, but my landlord thinks this one might be a finch? Or a canary? It seems to be fairly content, hanging out on a perch in the cage, eating, drinking, and somehow managing to scatter birdseed all over my floor. And it really, really loves to chirp. That part is getting old fast.

Haha that’s so weird! I can’t say I’ve had this happen to me, closest thing was probably when a bat was flying around in my apartment. I’d much prefer the chirping over a bat any day though. Best of luck finding the home for the little guy!

      I couldn’t handle a bat. I would have a panic attack.

  2. Oh my goodness- that is crazy! I can’t believe you were able to catch it! I bet someone is frantically looking for that guy!
I’ve never rescued a bird, but definitely saved several baby bunnies in my backyard last summer!
The photo is Honey is sooooooo cute… I just love that little puggle face!
On another note… I made savory oats last night, thanks to you (I put photos on my blog). Thank you so much for showing me Angela’s recipe!! It’s like a whole new world of possibilities opened up! πŸ™‚

I hope someone is looking for him, because I don’t think I’m a bird person. haha

Savory oats are so good! I’m going to check out your blog! πŸ™‚

Here’s to hoping birds sleep through the night, because his chirping will not go over well at 3am.

      1. Kait says

Cover the cage with something dark when you go to bed. We use navy blue sheets/blankets for our African Grey. I’ll see if my roomie knows what kind of bird this is…he’s the bird person and I just pretend!

PS Awesome story! Gotta love ridiculous stuff.

      2. Amanda says

Thanks, Kait! I covered the cage with a sheet last night, and didn’t hear a peep. I’m thinking it’s a canary, but I’m not really sure. Definitely let me know if your roommate has any idea…I don’t know what I’ve gotten myself into. haha

      3. Kait says

His vote is for a canary too. He also checked Craiglist for any missing bird posts and didn’t see anything. It might be another good place to check too!

When Kaybird (ok its Kaylee but that’s what I call her) gets loud during the day we first try to ignore her (no positive reinforcement) and then cover her for a bit if that doesn’t work. I’m not sure about canaries but African Grey’s are the equivalent of 3 yos so sometimes they just get bored and make noise. I’m guessing Yellow is the same, especially if she doesn’t have any toys. Do you have any stainless steel measuring cups or organic cotton socks/towels she can tear apart?

OH and for the most part, fresh produce is good for them although avocados are on the do-not-feed-kaybird list.

One last things – do you use non-stick cookware? The chemicals (e.g. PFOA and PFTE) that are released when teflon is heated is toxic (read: fatal) to birds. Just FYI. And I probably should have mentioned that yesterday.

        Good luck!

      4. Amanda says

THANK YOU!! This is so, so helpful. I found that Yellow is super chatty (well, chirpy) in the morning and then calms down in the afternoon. He’s sleeping all night though, which is a relief. My landlord gave me some sort of toy with beads on it that he’s sort of interested in, but I’ll see if I can find something new to help entertain him.

And good to know about the non-stick cookware. I feel like the fact that it kills birds is a pretty good indication that I shouldn’t be using it. Yikes.

  3. Haha! This is seriously something that sounds made up. I hope it shuts up throughout the night for you so you can sleep. I’m not a bird person at all so I’d have no patience for seed all over the floor and chirping, especially at 2am…

    1. Amanda says

It’s been a weird day. haha He (I have no idea if it’s a he or a she) stopped chirping when I brought the cage in my office with me, so maybe he just wanted company? I have no idea.

  4. OMG – your puppy is adorable. I am in love!! I wish I could rescue every animal!

    1. Amanda says

Thanks, Jamie! I think so too. πŸ™‚

  5. I just moved to Boston and Heather (from For the Love of Kale) mentioned that you’re a Boston blogger as well! I love your blog and I’m so glad I stumbled upon it πŸ™‚

    1. Amanda says

So glad Heather put you in touch! Welcome to Boston. πŸ™‚

  6. Amanda says

Honey is too cute!!! When I was little my mom was always rescuing all types of animals, lots of birds. Hope you find a home but if not sounds like he found a good one already!!

    1. Amanda says

My mom is the same way. I think I get it from her. πŸ™‚

I’m trying to convince my landlord to take the bird if no one claims it…he seems to like birds the way I like puppies. haha
