Update as of January 2016: I received an email from the PlateJoy team saying that they’ve decided to suspend their delivery service to focus exclusively on meal planning, which costs between $8 and $12 per month, depending on whether you opt for a 6-month or a 12-month plan. They’ve also expanded to offer meal planning internationally. Enter coupon code GET10 for $10 off at checkout!

Recently, I’ve been making a conscious effort to get away from doing product reviews on Pickles & Honey and instead I’ve been focusing more of my attention on recipe development. Every once in a while, though, I learn about something new that I think is totally awesome and worth sharing. PlateJoy is one of those things.
There are lots of meal planning and grocery delivery options out there, and at its core, PlateJoy falls into this category as well. What makes it unique, however, is that you get to customize it according to your dietary preferences and goals, you select which meals you’d like to eat for the week based on a handful of choices (I like this because I find too many options overwhelming), and then in as little as twenty-four hours, you have the groceries and meal plan delivered to your home.
It gets better though: the groceries are organic and non-GMO whenever possible (nearly all of mine were), they’re delivered from familiar and reliable providers like Whole Foods and Peapod, and PlateJoy doesn’t cost more than you would spend on groceries if you were to do the shopping yourself.
I was seriously impressed when I received my delivery from Whole Foods, right on time. PlateJoy generously gave me an $89 credit to try out the service (minimum order size is $59), and the ingredients I received would have cost me a few dollars more than that, not including the $10 personal shopping fee and $10 delivery charge (PlateJoy covered these costs). The bonus bouquet of flowers was an especially nice touch.
When I selected my own meals, I chose vegan and higher calorie options to avoid snacking, but there are certainly options for everyone.
I ended up enjoying superfood blueberry acai smoothies for breakfasts, veggie burgers and fruit or bean salads and tortilla chips for lunches, a really delicious eggplant, tofu and quinoa dish for dinners, and raspberry almond chia puddings for snacks and desserts. I went into it expecting to only be able to get one, maybe two meals out of each recipe, but I was pleasantly surprised that I ended up getting more like four generous servings from each, with some leftovers (extra burger buns, kale, roasted red peppers, etc). It was an excellent value.

Disclosure: I received a credit to try PlateJoy for free, but as always, all opinions are my own.
