Thank you to Kiss Me Organics’ Matcha for sponsoring this post!

I think the first time I tried matcha was around three years ago, when we were living in San Francisco. It was an impulse buy at a health food store and since I loved green tea, I thought I would give it a try in a homemade almond milk latte. I only remember this because when I took my first sip, I nearly spit it out. It was so bitter and gritty and tasted very, very green. I love green, but not green like most of those green superfood powders that taste like dirt. I tried to choke it down, but I couldn’t do it, and so that matcha powder sat untouched in my pantry for months until I finally decided it was time to toss it. (I really hate wasting money.)

And that was the end of my matcha drinking, until a few weeks ago when a company called Kiss Me Organics emailed and asked if I’d be interested in trying their organic matcha powder. My immediate reaction was “No!”, but I checked their Amazon reviews and nearly all of them were positive. I was also intrigued by the claim that their matcha has 137 times the antioxidants of brewed green tea—that’s a lot of antioxidants. I skeptically said yes, and my green tea powder arrived two days later (thank you, Amazon Prime).

I have not tried the Kiss Me Organics‘ matcha in a latte, but I have made a few smoothies. I am happy to report that they do not taste like dirt! This matcha is a beautiful, bright shade of green, and unlike the gritty green tea powder I first tried, it’s smooth and dissolves easily.

I received a matcha recipe guide with my order (it’s given to all first-time customers) and today I’m sharing a recipe for the Powerhouse Breakfast Smoothie, which I’ve adapted to use all raw ingredients, hemp seeds for healthy fat and protein, and some frozen fruit where it was more economical. I also like my smoothies on the icier side, but if you prefer a more room temperature drink, you can of course use fresh fruit instead.

The only thing about this smoothie is that green matcha + red strawberries = brown smoothie. So we’ll just look at the ingredients pre-blend…
